In his fourth Western, Sergio Leone introduces a female protagonist into what was previously a purely male universe. Claudia Cardinale, who had signalized to him that she wasn’t interested in taking on a typical secondary female role in a Western, plays former prostitute Jill, a battling pioneer who will not be put down; she ultimately shines brighter even than the masculinity myth that generally marks the genre.
